Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3

Released a little over a year ago in Japan, Clash of Ninja 3 shifts the original Clash of Ninja’s focus to Naruto’s sequel series, Naruto Shippuden, but retains the overall look and feel of the previous games. As usual, Tomy has done a great job with the cel-shaded graphics, and the presentation is clean and appropriate to the style of the series. Being a fighting game, much of the focus is on the online and versus modes, so the story is relatively short, primarily serving as an excuse to unlock more characters.

The story roughly traces the Rescue Gaara arc that comprises Naruto Shippuden’s first 35 episodes. Being a relatively popular arc with the fandom, this is not the first time that this arc has been depicted in a Naruto video game, and it will likely not be the last. However, Clash of Ninja does a reasonable job of distilling the events of the story down to a series of battles featuring a wide variety of familiar characters.

Where it suffers is in the battle conditions, which tend to be fairly simple and repetitive. Victory is almost always a matter of beating a foe with a special attack, which can be frustratingly tricky at times. The attack meter charges quickly, but your foe’s health needs to be low enough that they go down when the strike is unleashed. Otherwise they are apt to recover and pound you into paste. Further complicating matters are the occasionally imbalanced 2-on-1 battles, which can lead to some serious frustration.

However, the story only lasts around 17 fights, and is more an afterthought than anything else. It’s there to diversify the content beyond the obligatory versus modes while giving fans a familiar vehicle by which to unlock new characters. In other words, it’s mostly just a nice bit of comfort food.

Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares

Lost in Nightmares, Capcom’s first of two new episodes for Resident Evil 5 takes the series back to its survival-horror roots. Along with a crazed, anchor-wielding enemy, the game takes on the look and feel of past titles of the series.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that it felt like Resident Evil’s “pure horror” roots were ripped out of Resident Evil 5. To be fair, the game was a lot of fun and the series’ dramatic transformation into a more Gears of War-style cooperative action shooter worked for the most part. But as a fan of horror movies and Resident Evil’s survival-horror origins, I felt oddly betrayed by the game’s emphasis on explosions over suspense. When I sat down to play the first of the two new episodes coming soon for Resident Evil 5, titled Lost in Nightmares, Capcom explained that the return to horror in the episode is a direct response to fans’ reactions to RE5’s departure from the genre.

“A lot of fans thought Resident Evil 5 was too much action and not enough survival horror,” admits Capcom’s product marketing manager Matt Dahlgren. “And Lost in Nightmares (the first new episode available) is our response to that. After the original game shipped, we took a lot of fan feedback into account before creating the new episodes. There are two main ways people play Resident Evil: there’s the slow and suspenseful way, which is the more traditional Resident Evil experience, and there’s the more action-packed experience, which was featured in Resident Evil 5.”

Jude Law didn’t know anything about Sherlock Holmes!

judeBritish actor Jude Law has confessed he didn’t know anything about Sherlock Holmes before agreeing to play the fictional detective’s sidekick Dr. Watson in the new film.

The actor says he was unaware of the details of the literary character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle before agreeing to the role.

“Yes, I’m English, but I never really read the ‘Sherlock’ books as a boy. This was a new literary discovery for me, but a great one because as an adult I was able to sit down and love the source material. Believe me when I say it’s a good thing to grab a mug of tea and curl up with a great ‘Sherlock Holmes’ book,” he said.

Apart from being impressed with the books, he was also blown away by how the film’s director Guy Ritchie and the production team were able to recreate 19th Century England.

“The production designers did an amazing job embellishing historic England. The details were exquisite. I really felt as I had taken a time travel back into history,” said the 37-year-old.

Law stars in the action blockbuster alongside Robert Downey Jr. who plays the titular detective.

Following report that Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift ended their romance, an insider has revealed an issue that was said causing the break-up. Speaking to National Enquirer, the insider said the pair could not agree over food as they have different health lifestyle.

Lautner who is “a health nut” and has exercise regularly is said in the exact opposite of Swift who “hates the gym, takes only occasional yoga classes.” Moreover, the “Twilight” hunk reportedly follows an ultra strict diet while the country music singer is allegedly anti diet.

Regarding food choice, the insider stated Swift’s favorite restaurant is “the Cracker Barrel near her family’s Henderson, Tenn., home and her favorite dish is their biscuits and gravy” in addition to cheeseburgers and some sweet foods. In contrary, “Lautner is very athletic and health-conscious, so he eats mostly low-fat protein like skinless chicken breasts, egg whites and vegetables and fruits.”

Thus, the pair reportedly often argued about where they were going to have meal during their date nights. Additionally, the insider further claimed, “The only food option they can agree on is sushi.”

Counter-Strike : Half Life

half lifeHalf-Life: Counter-Strike is one of the most unusual PC game releases in months. The hugely popular mod for Valve Software’s Half-Life has been available for free download for well over a year, and you can still download it for free off the Internet now that it’s been through beta testing and has reached version 1.0. And if you don’t have the exceptional Half-Life, the new retail edition of Counter-Strike is a chance to get a stand-alone version of this outstanding multiplayer mod. The retail package also includes stand-alone versions of other multiplayer mods and game modes that normally require Half-Life, the best of which are also available free off the Internet: Team Fortress Classic, Opposing Force Multiplayer, Firearms, Redemption, Ricochet, and Wanted. Counter-Strike itself is a superb game that fully deserves top billing in this release.

Counter-Strike divides players into teams of terrorists and counterterrorists in four game modes: rescue/hold hostages, bomb target/defuse bomb, escape from/guard an area, and assassinate/guard a VIP. None of these ideas are particularly original, but they’re well implemented, and they strike an effective balance between realistic stealth and frenzied action. The thematically varied maps maximize tactical possibilities with alternate routes, multiple levels, and abundant cover. Games are played in short rounds, and when you’re killed, you sit out the round as an invisible observer; there are no deathmatch-style respawns. This creates a strong social aspect, because with “dead” players chatting, there can be an enormous sense of tension for the remaining players stalking each other. Another big impetus to stay alive is that the more successful you and your team are each round, the more money you earn for buying bigger and better weapons. Unfortunately this can lead to a huge imbalance in firepower when one team wins a few consecutive rounds.

One of Counter-Strike’s biggest appeals has always been the selection of weapons. In addition to a knife and assorted grenades, there’s a wide variety of accurately modeled pistols, shotguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles. Three new weapons have been added to version 1.0: the H&K UMP .45, FN Five-Seven, and the SIG SG-550, though the retail version of the game uses invented names for all weapons.

Finally a Chuckle from TV

I’m not into blogs really, or indeed even watching much telly, but I guess there is always a time when a show watched by accident captures your imagination and makes you laugh. In this case, the show in question being two and a half men.

Must say I’m quite surprised as I don’t normally watch a lot on the telly let alone American comedy but Charlie Sheen and Jo Cryer work brilliantly together and it’s a great story line. Seriously, two and a half men has got me addicted so I guess I recommend it – it’s on Comedy Central.

Sherlock Holmes

After finally catching serial killer and occult “sorcerer” Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock
Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson can close yet another successful case. But when Blackwood

sherlock homesAfter finally catching serial killer and occult “sorcerer” Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson can close yet another successful case. But when Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must take up the hunt once again. Contending with his partner’s new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the dauntless detective must unravel the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic – and the deadly embrace of temptress Irene Adler

Sherlock Holmes is a tricky subject for modern audiences.   Guy Ritchie has gone for Holmes as jokey and slightly camp action hero with Downey giving an energetic performance. Whereas in ‘Iron Man’, Downey perfectly caught the dry decadence of the character, here he plays Holmes as a volatile modern eccentric who seems to spend most of his time sleeping on the floor, jumping around and trying to trick Watson (Jude Law) out of getting married.  The film has quite a look to it and a fast pace but, thanks to the comedic tone, nothing ever seems to be at risk. Even one of the best action sequences (in which Watson appears to be killed) ends not with a bang but a line of dialogue ”Watson’s alive”, which feels oddly like a cop-out.
